The horseshoes imbedded in cement in the sidewalk on University Avenue and the street next to the old Rutherfold's store (1st or 2nd) were placed there when a Mr. Thebau had the sidewalk made at his own expense. He owned a lot of real estate around there (including, possibly, the Star Garage) and had a livery stable and black- smith shop, to which he directed people's steps in this cunning manner.

When the sidewalk was fixed from time to time, the horseshoes were left embedded.
