Banned Books Week "is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read and the importance of the First Amendment." The week-long event occurs simultaneously at libraries, bookstores and other locations across the U.S. during the last week of September. Banned Books Week events include activities, contests, and readings from challenged books.

The list of frequently challenged books includes a number of classics, 46 out of the top 100 classic novels of the 20th century.
