To find a local obituary for Alachua County, you may search the Gainesville Sun Collection online. This database is available for free with a valid library card. The Gainesville Sun Collection is searchable and contains both full color images and text only files for issues dated 1911 to the present.

In addition to the Gainesville Sun, the library subscribes to the database America's News, which contains other newspapers from around the country.

The Gainesville Sun Microfilm Index has been digitized for the years 1986 to 2007 and can be used to locate article and obituary citations. The physical index for the years 1900 to 1985 is located at the Headquarters Library with the microfilm collection. To access this collection, please visit the Headquarters Library during open hours. Articles can be saved to a USB flash drive or printed. Printing costs 10¢ per page for black and white and $1 per page for color. Library staff is unable to provide change. Printing stations only accept silver change, $1 and $5 bills, and cannot accept credit cards at this time.
