These are the steps OverDrive recommends when audiobook downloads get hung up on a Windows computer:

Audiobooks in OverDrive Media Console (OMC) for Windows:

  1. Delete the title from OMC then close the application.
  2. Search your computer for the title and delete each instance you find.
Audiobooks are usually found in Documents > My Media > MP3 Audiobooks.
  3. Delete your temporary Internet files. (This step is extremely important.)
  4. Close and reopen your web browser.
  5. Try downloading the title again.

If you're getting the error message that the download timed out, there's a good chance those steps will not solve the problem.  If that's the case, please proceed to the following steps and try them one by one, in order.

  • Have you successfully downloaded an OverDrive title to OMC before?

If so, what has changed since your last download?

Have you installed or uninstalled anything?

If you've successfully downloaded an OverDrive audiobook to your computer before and have not installed or uninstalled anything, please proceed to the next step.  Otherwise, please let us know what you have installed or uninstalled since the last time you successfully downloaded an audiobook from OverDrive.
  • Are you using a firewall? Windows has one built in as do several anti-virus suites (Norton, McAfee, AVG, etc.). A firewall could be blocking OMC's access to the Internet. Temporarily disable your firewall, then try downloading the file again. If you can download titles after disabling your firewall, an exception needs to be added for OMC in your firewall settings.  If you still cannot download titles, please re-enable your firewall and proceed to the next step.
  • If you are using a 'web accelerator', please disable it.

If you still cannot download mp3 audiobooks, please proceed to the next step.
  • If you are using a pop-up blocker, please temporarily disable it. Then test OMC's connection. If you can download titles with your pop-up blocker disabled, an exception needs to be added for OMC in your pop-up blocker settings.

If you still cannot download mp3 audiobooks, please proceed to the next step.
  • Are you behind a proxy server? If so, you need to add authentication information to OMC by going to Tools > Options and entering your credentials in the provided fields.
